So, I've been looking on Pintrest at cake decorating ideas, and spending lots of time on YouTube learning different techniques. I've been driving my husband nuts telling him what the proper way to make a Butter Cream rose is, and how to make a delicious daisy, and the right way to hold the piping bag when you are forming leaves. Today, I decided I was going to put all my new knowledge to use, and I was going to make a beautiful blue based cake with orange daisies, and purples roses, and yellow somethings. And then I was going to practice making a pretty boarder with white icing. It was magnificent in my head!
I created a delicious pumpkin spice cake while Growly Bear was napping this morning, and made a batch of cream cheese icing. When she woke up, after she had lunch, we ran down town to by more supplies! I made a big batch of butter cream icing as soon as we got home, and I was set to create my masterpiece.
Unfortunately it didn't go as planned, and it ended up looking like an angry 4 year old with poor motor skills broke into my house and attacked my carefully baked cake. I can't even believe I'm sharing this with the entire world, but here goes!
I started with that big orange thing in the top left hand corner. It was suppose to be a Gerber Daisy. Clearly, it's not. I tried, but my icing was too runny, so I threw the bag in the freezer for a few minutes so that it could harden up a little.
I decided I'd try the boarder instead. (This was going to be using the cream cheese icing.) It was SO thick though I couldn't get it to come out of the tip smoothly. So I kept attempting, and then having to wipe off the icing (and eat it!) and start again. You'll notice the smudgy white all over the edges - that's why!
By this point I'd forgotten about the orange icing in the freezer, and by the time I got it out, it was too hard to use.
My creative fuse was fizzling by this point, and I'd made such a mess, and Growly Bear was tired and ready for her nap, so I decided to call it a day. But then, I remembered this cool technique I saw for making roses! And guess what, it's mostly worked! (Notice the attractive way I put absolutely no thought into their placement!)
The best part is though, while I was cleaning up this disaster and drowning my sorrows in finger-fulls of cream cheese frosting, I discovered that there were hard lumps of sugar throughout the entire batch of icing! And when I inspected my decorating tip, I found that one of these sugar lumps was lodged in it! That means there was at least a partial reason for my lack of decorating skills! it wasn't me! It was the icing, and I don't completely suck! (Hopefully!) So, I've decided to not give up completely. I've got some leftover butter cream icing in the fridge. Maybe I'll feel inspired in a day or two, and I'll give it a shot again.
So, better luck next time!
